Washington County, Minnesota, is bordered by both the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers, and it contains natural resources that are diverse and aesthetically attractive. The County's parks highlight many of these natural resources through outdoor education programs, displays at historic sites, a permanent orienteering course, camping facilities, and numerous turf and paved trails. Parks in the system include: Lake Elmo Park Reserve, St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park, Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park, Square Lake Park, Pine Point Park, Point Douglas Park, Big Marine Park Reserve, and the 'Historic Courthouse' - the oldest standing courthouse in Minnesota.
'Campfire Programs' are conducted in each of the County's two campgrounds on Saturday evenings from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. The programs are presented by local nature centers, including Carpenter Nature Center, Lee and Rose Warner Nature Center, Dodge Nature Center, Tamarack Nature Center, and the Wildlife Science Center.
