Abstract:

About Jim Gerholdt and the Remarkable Reptiles program:

Jim worked in zoos for over 25 years. He was one of the first Zoo Keepers hired by the Minnesota Zoological Garden in 1977, prior to its opening in 1978. He worked there until his retirement in 1998. During his zoo career he served 2 terms on the Antivenom Committee of the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (now American Zoo Association) and also served as an advisor to the Species Survival Plan for the Aruba Island Rattlesnake. He assisted in field work on Aruba in 1989.

Jim Gerholdt is the author of 32 childrens books on insects (6), reptiles (4), amphibians (4), snakes (6), spiders (6), and birds (6) for grades K-2. He is presently employed part-time by the Science Museum of Minnesota, teaching continuing education classes on reptiles and amphibians.

He has been presenting programs throughout the Twin Cities metro area, as well as outstate Minnesota since 1985. Clients include schools, libraries, churches, nature centers, scout groups, civic events and birthday parties. References can be provided upon request.

Jim also maintains a large file of professional quality slides of reptiles, amphibians, insects and spiders. His work has appeared in numerous magazines: Time, Defenders, DNR Volunteer, Reptile & Amphibian, Captive Breeding, Reptilian (British), Pet Reptile (British), Reptiles, Reptile & Amphibian Hobbyist and South Dakota Conservation Digest.

Other places his photos have appeared are:

  • Bell Museum's publication, Imprint and Horizons (Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute).
  • Calendars published by Pet Prints, Inc.
  • Rainbow Educational Media - CD-ROM
  • Firefly Books

A growing list of national publishers are also using his photos. Inquiries are welcome.

He also works closely with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and has aided with field studies of the Timber Rattlesnake, and has served on the committee that eliminated the bounty on this species several years before it became a protected species. He maintains, under permit, 2 of the 4 species of protected Minnesota reptiles for use in his educational programs.

Remarkable Reptiles is an educational program or display that uses live animals and artifacts to entertain and teach.

In addition to live formal presentations, I also offer a display of live reptiles for events that prefer a more casual presentation. This display consists of 16 cages plus assorted artifacts. The basic set-up time for a display is 4 hours.
