Abstract:

The Population Educator is a free newsletter for teachers that features hands-on activities for grades K-12, resource reviews, and profiles of other teachers who are leading the way in population education. It comes out several times a year and is a great way to stay up-to-date!

Here are some past issues:

  • February, 2013
    "Most Valuable Trainer 2013 (PDF)"
This year we are honoring Terri Clark as our Most Valuable Trainer - read about her experiences with Population Ed. Find a synopsis of the documentary film Human Footprint along with classroom discussion questions. Also, learn about our newest resource - "Counting on People: K-5 Activities for Global Citizenship." Activity: "Mining for Chocolate" - After matching everyday products to their rock or mineral sources, students "mine" chocolate chip cookies to discover the impacts of many mining operations.
  • May, 2012
"Teaching about Climate Change in Elementary, Middle, and High School Classes (PDF)"
Climate change is a relevant, current, and important topic that some teachers find challenging to tackle in the classroom. Read about several Population Ed activities to teach about our changing planet in a meaningful and fact-based way. Also, learn about curriculum updates, our 2012-2013 student video contest, and our partnership with the We Are Teachers website for educators. Activity: "How Much Space Do We Need" - Every piece of land has a limited capacity to support people and the number that can be sustained depends on the rate at which resources are consumed.
