The Jay C. Hormel Nature Center is located in Austin, MN on 21st Street NE 1/4 mile north of Interstate 90. There are approximately 11 miles of hiking, snowshoeing and x-country ski trails that traverse through woods and prairie.
Our day use school program emphasizes environmental education for grades K-7. Written curriculum has been developed for each grade level designed to be tied into existing school curriculum in Austin. For other grade levels we adapt tour programs to correspond with their curriculum. We have a summer adventure program for K-8 students.
Our public programs include canoe trips, an endowment funded nature program for K-8 students, folk music, pioneer crafts, Halloween Warm-up trail hike, free summer senior special programs, free handicapped access trail rides, free family and adult environmental programs bird and flower hikes. There is a sugar shack for maple syruping, an interpretive building and hands-on displays, and an auditorium for large group programs.
The nature center trails are open from 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. Monday thru Sunday. The interpretive building is open from Monday thru Saturday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. closed during the noon hour and Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
