Abstract: 

This resource was created through a partnership of Hennepin County, Community POWER and early childhood family educators. It is a free, on-line environmental toolkit for early childhood family education programs. The toolkit will help Early Childhood Family educators actively engage families in creating a healthier environment in the home by reducing waste, properly disposing of hazardous items,rethinking reuse and recycling, protecing water quality, and conserving energy.

The tool kit includes the following divided into the topics of Waste Reduction, Recycling, Toxicity Reduction, Protecting Water Resources, and Climate change and Energy conservation:

  • Essential background and preparation information for educators to successfully present on the five subject areas
  • Lesson plan ideas for parent-child interaction activities and adult lessons.
  • Resources available to support teaching environmental education concepts including handouts, websites, learning trunks and presenters.
  • Special event ideas
  • Waste reduction and recycling resources for internal operations.
  • It also:

  • follows Minnesota's Parent Education Core Curriculum;
  • was written by experienced ECFE leaders;
  • includes detailed lesson plans and resources;
  • is flexible and can be modified to fit many programs;
  • is free and downloadable at http://www.hennepin.us/communitypower.

    Hennepin County Environmental Services has also developed toolkits designed for congregations and community organizations. There are also available in PDF or web page format at http://www.hennepin.us/communitypower.
