The Bonanza Educational Center (BEC) is a consortium of seven school districts, Beardsley, Bellingham, Big Stone City, S.D., Browns Valley, Chokio/Alberta, Clinton/Graceville, and Ortonville, that have created an alternative hands-on environmental education center for their students and communities.
The BEC site is located at the Bonanza area of Big Stone State Park in the former interpretive center building. This building had been unused by the Department of Natural Resources for many years and was slated for demolition. Surrounding the center are 223 acres of restored prairie, oak/basswood forest and the shores of Big Stone lake, offering a unique outdoor classroom.
A K-12 outcome based, integrated curriculum was developed for the center and is being used by the member schools. Teacher in-services, community programs, 4-H, community education, programs are being conducted.
