Director of Health Services

A team of 4 directors and supervisors work together to manage the Summer Camp Counselors and Assistant Trip Leaders, schedule activities, assign dorms rooms, arrange for overnights and work with outside groups. The team supports and mentors staff, assisting with behavior management and instructing classes as needed. Minimum age 21.

The Director of Health Services is a vital part of the director team.  They provide leadership and guidance to staff and campers about the physical and emotional health of summer youth program participants. In addition, they provide basic first aid, support campers with special needs, transport campers for off-camp medical care, assist campers with the management of their medication, communicate with participant families about the health of campers, monitor medical supplies, promote healthy lifestyle habits for all staff and campers and assist in the daily management of the Wolf Ridge Summer Youth Programs and Trips.

Position Responsibilities

This position has four main responsibility areas; camper health, record keeping, health communication and daily camp management

Camper Health

  • Set-up and breakdown of the health center
  • Ensure health and safety of campers and staff
  • Collect & organize camper & staff medical forms
  • Collect and administer medications (prescribed and over-the-counter)
  • Providing first aid for minor injuries and illnesses
  • Attending to home sickness & dehydration
  • Accompany sick/injured campers or staff to the hospital or to medical appointments
  • On-call 24 hours, 5 to 6 days a week while camp is in session

Record Keeping

  • Maintain accurate and detailed health logs & incident reports

Health Communication

  • Communicate with parents/guardians
  • Keeping open communication with Camp Director
  • Communicating specific camper health needs (allergies, special diets) to appropriate staff
  • Communicate with local medics / hospital if needed

Daily Camp Management

  • Participate in camp activities and events
  • Assist in the implementation of staff training
  • Other duties as needed

Required Qualifications & Expectations

A camp job is can be challenging – think 14 hour days, 5 – 6 days a week – but directors are ready to work hard to meet those challenges. Most of all, directors are always focused on ensuring that the campers and staff have an amazing and memorable camp experience.

The Director of Health Services must

  • Possess a current First Responder and/or Wilderness First Responder certification or higher is required
  • Possess a current CPR/AED certification
  • Possess a current driver’s license
  • Have a minimum of one year’s experience in providing health care for children
  • Friendly, happy, with a good sense of humor (laughter can be the best medicine)
  • Take the initiative to see problems, find solutions, and make recommendations as it relates to 
your area of responsibility
  • Responsible, detail oriented and hard-working
  • Be a minimum age 21
