Responsibilities of Animal Care and Education Internship

  • Handling and caring for the animals, cleaning and maintenance of animal permanent housing, repair and building perches, diet preparation and creating enrichment
  • Greeting and speaking with the public and guests of Wolf Ridge in provision of educational programs
  • Assisting in bird banding and filling bird feeders once per week
  • Teaching an average of two wildlife classes per week (3 hours in length) to groups of youth and adults will be included with this position

The Intern will learn:

  • Midwestern raptor biology and natural history
  • Basics of interpretation for a variety of audiences
  • How to present and evaluate public programs
  • Appropriate care and management of education animals; including housing, feeding, and training
  • Appropriate methods to handle raptors and a porcupine
  • To become competent at teaching a 3-hour class on birds and related wildlife subjects
  • Learn bird banding techniques under a Master bird bander

Work Schedule

  • Variable up to 40 hours/week. Holidays and weekends are included but schedule may vary.

Compensation

  • On campus housing and food is available in summer
  • Credit for this internship can be arranged through the intern’s current college or university

Education, Experience and Internship Requirements

  • Junior or senior in college or older
  • In good physical condition and able to lift or carry 50 pounds
  • Excitement for learning
  • Drivers License
  • Position conditional upon acceptable background screening
