Environmental Education Teaching Practicum Internship in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Teaching Practicum Interns will gain hands-on, real world experiences working with and assisting professional environmental education staff in a variety of tasks including curriculum development, leading K-6th grade education programs in the classroom and outdoors, and maintaining educational resources. Additional opportunities exist to assist the refuge Visitor Services team with special events and public programming.
Location: Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge & Wetland Management District (Refuge/WMD) headquarters in Bloomington and Carver are close to the busy metropolitan area of the Twin Cities. The wildlife refuge is a haven to bald eagles, river otters, waterfowl and a variety of other wildlife. The refuge comprises over 15,000 acres which lie in multiple units along 70 miles of the Minnesota River. The habitat is a mixture of wetlands, floodplain and upland forest, oak savanna and prairie.
Benefits: This is a paid experience supported by the non-profit organization Refuge Friends, Inc. Interns are provided professional development and training opportunities with conservation and education partners throughout Minnesota. Free housing may be available near Carver. Teaching Practicum Interns work 32 hours per week and are paid a monthly stipend from Refuge Friends Inc.
Qualifications: Interested applicants should have excellent verbal/written skills, be able to work with the public and students from diverse backgrounds and possess a strong ability to work both independently and in small groups. Work and/or an interest in environmental education, natural resources or a related field is preferred. Basic computer skills and a valid driver’s license are required. Applicants do not have to be currently enrolled in a university program to be eligible.
Dates of work: Period of work is approximately September 4, 2018-June 7, 2019.
