TYPE OF APPOINTMENT:

This position is a fixed-term academic staff appointment in the University of Wisconsin –Madison Division of Extension.

The position is subject to Extension personnel policies. Reappointment beyond June 30, 2021 is dependent upon performance and availability of funding. This position can be structured as a post-doctoral fellowship.

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Curriculum & Evaluation Specialist provides support for the evaluation of outreach & educational programs in areas of natural resources. The position is part of Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center which works to improve and demonstrate the value of environmental programs. The primary purpose of this position is to design and carry out various evaluations primarily involving survey methodology and data analysis of Upham Woods’s environmental education programming. Further, this position will develop curriculum and training materials for staff to implement the improvement of programs based upon evaluation. This position works closely with the Environmental Education State Specialist Faculty and the Upham Woods Research Naturalist team.

PRIMARY DUTIES/ ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Work collaboratively with other staff of Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center to advance the state of environmental education programming in Wisconsin Reach and engage diverse audiences in ways that are inclusive and do not discriminate to ensure full access to programs, facilities and educational services Assists in the development of surveys and other data collection instruments

  • Administers Web-based surveys using Qualtrics, mailed surveys, and in-person surveys
  • Conducts phone and in-person interviews
  • Enters survey data using Excel, SPSS, and other appropriate software
  • Cleans and manages databases
  • Conducts quantitative data analysis using SPSS, R, or other appropriate statistical analysis software
  • Conducts qualitative data analysis
  • Identifies preliminary findings for review by the Environmental Education State Specialist Faculty
  • Drafts preliminary documents of results and findings for review by the Environmental Education State Specialist Faculty
  • Be responsive to evolving position, program, office and organizational needs; perform adjusted or additional duties as requested
  • Contribute leadership, as needed, to ensure effective Upham Woods program and research operations
  • Create databases for tracking and storing data
  • Proofread surveys and reports
  • Authoring peer-reviewed manuscripts and presenting at national/international conferences
  • Curriculum & Evaluation Specialist
  • Mentoring undergraduate interns and researchers
  • Grant-writing in support of Upham Woods and the statewide environmental education program

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Make individual arrangements for transportation adequate to meet position responsibilities and essential job functions
  • Assume occasional travel throughout the county and within the state for data collection and/or meetings
  • Work evenings and weekends occasionally, as needed, to meet local needs and grant/partner deadlines
  • This position is based on site at Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center

POSITION EXPECTATIONS:

The Curriculum & Evaluation Specialist is accountable to the Environmental Education State Specialist Faculty for all programmatic matters and matters related to vacation, leave of absence, salary and promotion. The position is part of the Naturalist Resources Institute program area of the University of Wisconsin –Madison Division of Extension. The position cooperates with Extension county educators and state specialists as well as staff in local, state and federal agencies.

The Curriculum & Evaluation Specialist actively participates in the shared governance and policy development of the institution, personally or through representatives, to ensure representation in matters affecting staff.

TO BE CONSIDERED ELIGIBLE FOR THIS POSITION, YOU MUST MEET ALL OF THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters with course work related to the responsibilities of this position such as statistical analysis, regression analysis, survey and/or research methods, etc.
  • Instructional experience in a K-16 educational context
  • Demonstrated success in advanced data analysis using software packages such as SPSS
  • Demonstrated success in data collection
  • Experience with evaluation methods in applied settings
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative evaluation techniques
  • Demonstrated skill using computers and internet applications
  • Ability to effectively interact with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, and national origin including indigenous cultures, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ph.D. with course work related to the responsibilities of this position such statistical analysis, regression analysis, survey and/or research methods, etc.
  • Experience with science education, natural resources and/or field-based instruction
  • Experience in survey design and/or evaluation planning
  • Demonstrated ability to present data and findings effectively, i.e. verbally, in writing and visually/graphically (i.e. conference presentations and publications)
  • Interest in data visualization and/or skills in graphic design
  • Strong writing skills
  • Microsoft Office proficiency
  • Ability to multi-task and reprioritize as needed
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills in a team setting and on an individual basis
  • Ability to plan collaboratively and execute independently
  • Ability to delegate to Research Naturalist

POSITION DESCRIPTION CLARIFICATION:

This position description is not intended to be comprehensive in nature given the changes in primary duties/essential job functions and position expectations that can occur overtime in response to emerging and assessed community, program and organizational needs. Changes to this position description are subject to the approval of the Human Resource Development Office and those to whom the position is accountable.

POSITION BENEFITS and SALARY:

State of Wisconsin benefits (http://www.uwsa.edu/hr/benefits/newemp/orientwrs.pdf) including retirement, vacation, sick leave, health insurance, and other insurances. Starting salary range at 100% is $36,335 – $41,895 commensurate with qualifications and experience.
