Organizational Overview

The St. Croix River Association is the voice of the river and the only conservation organization with a watershed-wide scope in the St. Croix River basin. As the friends group for the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, we support and complement the National Park Service’s work within the Riverway. With a staff of ten and a committed Board of Directors, the St. Croix River Association is focused on connecting more people to this national park while, at the same time protecting the land and water of the Riverway.

 

Position Description

We want to see a more equitable, inclusive, and diverse outdoors. We believe that diversity strengthens and enriches our work and this place, and makes the environmental movement more relevant than ever. The River Connections Guide will lead exploration and discovery activities to connect new and diverse, urban audiences to the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, America’s first wild and scenic river National Park. The goal of this program will offer opportunities for all people to enjoy and feel comfortable recreating in the Riverway, and to integrate inclusion into all aspects of programming. The success candidate will identify audiences and communities we are not reaching, and then develop a strategy to build relationships and partnerships to provide outdoor recreation programs that inspire connections to the Riverway.

 

The River Connections Guide will:

  • Develop and employ strategies that engage and cultivate lasting relationships with diverse audiences from the Twin Cities Metro Area and other underserved audiences.
  • Coordinate and lead inclusive SCRA Outside adventures for new and returning audiences, such as art and nature, backpacking, camping, climbing, fishing, hiking, paddling, skiing, snowshoeing, etc.
  • Assist with K-12 environmental education programming as needed.
  • Train SCRA’s Volunteer Trip Leader team to assist with adventure programming.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (environmental or outdoor education; natural or cultural resource management; outdoor recreation; park/recreation management, etc.)
  • Experience leading outdoor day and overnight trips with people of various cultural and economic backgrounds, and a diverse mix of abilities and outdoor skills
  • Current Wilderness First Aid/Wilderness Responder certification with CPR/AED
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and proficient in Microsoft Office or equivalent software.
  • Able to self-manage time and assignments, capable of working under pressure while managing multiple tasks and deadlines and highly developed organizational skills
  • Must have car and valid driver’s license, and be able to work evenings and weekends as needed, and the ability to learn how to load and haul a canoe / kayak trailer
  • General knowledge of the National Park Service or St. Croix National Scenic Riverway
  • Positive, enthusiastic and flexible
  • Knowledge of outdoor safety and risk management best practices

 

This is a full-time position, with a starting wage of $18 hourly, plus benefits including vacation, health insurance, etc. We offer a flexible work schedule, with occasional night or weekend work. This is an energetic, fast paced, quickly evolving, work environment. The successful candidate will have the chance to associate with people who are passionate about and committed to maintaining the unique qualities of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.
