National Eagle Center Seasonal Naturalist

 

Job Purpose: As a Naturalist, this position serves a critical role, providing educational programming and representing the National Eagle Center to a wide range of audiences and age groups, both onsite and at offsite venues. Naturalists also provide daily husbandry and routine care for the collection of avian ambassadors.

 

Reports to: Director of Education

 

Naturalist Education and Avian Care:

  • Enhance the National Eagle Center’s reputation and mission impact by providing excellent visitor experiences and educational programming in classroom and informal settings
  • Represent the National Eagle Center to a wide variety of audiences by offering engaging environmental education programs at offsite venues
  • Work closely with Education Department team to ensure the highest quality care of the resident eagles
  • Assist with daily care for the resident avian collection and assist with hands-on avian care, including restraining birds for required medical and equipment needs
  • Coordinate summer fishing program
  • Support the success of the National Eagle Center by working effectively with staff, volunteers and interns
  • Other duties as requested

 

24-40 hours/wk, non-exempt position

Temporary position, starts immediately through October 31, 2018

 

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with handling, care and management of raptors, preferably eagles
  • Demonstrated experience presenting engaging environmental education programs to a variety of audiences
  • Superior public speaking and interpersonal communication skills
  • Self-motivator with strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work in a highly collaborative, team-oriented setting
  • Enthusiasm for the National Eagle Center’s mission and programs

 

Requirements:

  • Willing and able to work a varied schedule, including weekends and occasional evening hours
  • College level study required with concentration in biology, wildlife, environmental education or related field preferred
  • Moderate physical ability required; must be able to perform manual tasks such as avian husbandry and food preparation, stand for extended periods, regularly bend, kneel, squat and stretch; able to lift 50-75 pounds
  • Valid driver’s license

 

Compensation:

Range $10.00 - $11.50 per hour, based on qualifications

Lightly furnished housing is available upon request
