The Minnesota Zoological Garden has a full-time Conservation Engagement Specialist opportunity in its Conservation, Education and Nature division. This position is responsible for developing conservation-focused interpretive and educational communication strategies and content using a variety of platforms, including social media. The position develops and implements community engagement wildlife conservation action activities and campaigns to help promote and position the Zoo as a trusted conservation organization that saves wildlife. The position may assist with field conservation activities. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop, implement and evaluate conservation interpretive and educational communication plans and strategies
  • Develop, edit and distribute conservation interpretive, promotional and educational messaging over a variety of mediums
  • Develop and coordinate public engagement conservation action campaigns associated with Zoo wildlife conservation initiatives
  • Assist with conservation activities to better inform the development of conservation action campaigns


Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited educational institution in a scientific, education, or communication field
  • 1 year of experience creating and posting professional and engaging content on a regular basis using one or more social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and responding to public comments and questions on those platforms
  • Knowledge of conservation-specific and other scientific terminology sufficient to understand the work of Zoo biologists and communicate it to general audiences
  • Written communication skills and knowledge of writing requirements sufficient to create engaging, audience-appropriate text for reports, blogs, and social media
  • Excellent interpretation, teaching, and presentation skills sufficient to deliver educational and engaging community outreach, public engagement, or educational programs in a non-formal environment
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) sufficient to write, send, and organize emails; search calendars; schedule meetings; create, format, save and print documents; create and edit tables; manipulate photos; enter, organize, summarize, and graph data; create or modify visually appealing multi-slide presentations that include photos, tables, graphs, and/or animated text as well as notes
  • Demonstrated ability to research a variety of topics, summarize information into clear and concise correspondence and reports, and effectively communicate scientific concepts and results to general audiences
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with project management skill sufficient to create clear and attainable project objectives, build project requirements, coordinate the activity of others working on the project, oversee the cost, time and scope of the projects, manage project constraints, and communicate progress and end results.
  • Ability to conduct outdoor scientific field work, collecting and managing scientific data, and summarizing data sufficient to facilitate evaluation and interpretation of research
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
  • Current valid driver’s license



$20.83 - $30.25/hourly; $43,493 - $63,162/annually
