Job Announcement for Lead Naturalist – North Mississippi Regional Park

 

Position Description: The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is seeking a part-time lead naturalist to work out of Kroening Interpretive Center located within North Mississippi Regional Park. The Lead Naturalist will coordinate public programs and promotion as well as conduct community outreach offsite. The Lead Naturalist will also supervise and mentor four teenage interns ages 14-18 during the summer, potentially continuing projects into the school year.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide supervision, motivation and workplace guidance to teen interns while acting as a role model and mentor
    • Oversee and schedule teen intern programming, including the development of experiential learning projects that will enhance teens’ knowledge and skill set
    • Lead weekly group and individual meetings with interns
    • Set expectations for intern behavior, standards for work quality and enforce program rules
  • Coordinate public program development, promotion, registrations and communications with participants
  • Positively represent the Park while promoting programming at offsite outreach events. Pursue additional opportunities for community outreach
  • Engage visitors of all ages to enhance their experience at the park and provide high quality customer service
  • Assist with citizen science programming opportunities while incorporating teen interns

 

Hours:  This is a year round, part-time position averaging 20 hours per week during the school year and 25 hours per week during the summer. The majority of shifts will be between 10am-4pm and include weekend days. During the summer Thursday evenings from 4-9pm will be required to supervise the Neighborhood Nights program.

 

Compensation:  $17.00 per hour

 

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate teens and build a team
  • Ability to recognize, and respond in a positive manner, to the needs of youth workers
  • Interpretive or environmental education experience at a nature center or similar
  • Working knowledge of MN flora, fauna and ecosystems
  • College course work in environmental education, ecology, natural history or teaching
  • Must be a strong leader, self-starter, and have the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision
  • Excellent problem solving skills, ability to adapt, creativity and enthusiasm
  • Strong organizational, communication and public speaking skills
  • Work well with diverse populations, excellent customer service skills, positive attitude and good sense of humor
  • Familiarity and confidence working with Microsoft Office software
  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs, hike uneven terrain, and teach effectively in all weather conditions

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with ActiveNet software
  • Previous experience developing and promoting public programs
  • Demonstrated success leading teenagers in a professional setting
  • Ability to teach in another language
