STARTING SALARY: $12.00 - $13.00/hour, depending on experience

HOURS:  This is a thirteen week (520 hours) seasonal position.  The approximate start date is May 14, 2019



This is a thirteen week (520 hours) seasonal position.  The approximate start date is May 14, 2019. This position will assist in maintaining and monitoring the City’s natural areas.  This will involve extensive field work in a variety of habitats, including prairies, oak savannas and wetlands.  The job also includes landscaping work to maintain raingardens and native plant demonstration gardens. Work will include herbicide spot spraying, weeding, and natural resources data collection and computer data entry.  Other duties may include water quality sampling, planting, seeding, public education, controlling buckthorn, and working on various other natural resources projects. 


  1. Control invasive plant species in City natural areas through herbicide spraying, hand weeding, weed whipping and other techniques. 
  2. Maintain appearance of City raingardens and native plant demonstration gardens through herbicide spraying, hand weeding, mulching and other techniques.
  3. Limited work in interacting with, educating or directing volunteers, school groups, nature walk attendees and private citizens will be possible. 
  4. Assist in natural resource data collection.  This will include plant surveys and water quality sampling. 
  5. Perform other duties as assigned


  • Ability to identify common native plants and weed species in various stages of growth.  Interest in Minnesota plant communities and native habitat management is preferred.
  • This position involves working outside for the majority of each day.   Must be willing to perform field work in inclement weather and maneuver in varied terrain while maintaining a positive attitude.  Must be willing and able to safely work with herbicide to control invasive plant species.  On an occasional basis must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to perform landscaping duties such as mulching, hand weeding, weed whipping, and edging repair.
  • Knowledge and ability to use computer spreadsheets, data management and word processing programs (Microsoft Office products). Experience using GPS for marking field locations preferred. Ability to carefully and accurately collect and record data is important. 
  • Ability to work in a small team environment with varied levels of supervision.
  • Comfortable interacting with park visitors on current environmental issues.


  • Minimum age 18
  • Valid Driver’s License​


  • Experience controlling invasive plants or experience with other habitat management activities
  • Gardening or landscaping experience
  • Experience using water quality monitoring equipment​
