Site Information: Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center (CNC) is a private non-profit nature center located 5 miles north of Hastings, MN on the scenic St. Croix River. Its mission is to develop and enhance appreciation for the natural world through quality environmental education, conservation practices, and outdoor experiences for visitors of all ages and capabilities. The site consists of 725 acres of diverse habitats on both the Minnesota and the Wisconsin sides of the river including a hands-on Visitor Center and 15 miles of hiking trails.
Position Description: Environmental Education Interns receive training from professional naturalists to teach a variety of programs to visitors of all ages, help with ongoing research projects, and assist with caring for the animal ambassadors, including handling birds of prey. Opportunities will be available to learn techniques for developing and evaluating programs as well as developing public exhibits and educational displays.
Qualifications: CNC is seeking interns who have a desire to pursue a career in environmental education, have a general knowledge of natural history, have an ability to relate well to all kinds of people, are self-motivated and reliable, and have excellent written and oral communication skills. Hiring preference is given to junior or senior students who are pursuing a degree in a related field.
Benefits and Compensation: Benefits include professional training and regular evaluations, hands-on work experience in environmental education, academic credit (optional), free on-site housing and a $150 weekly reimbursement for each full time intern.
Internship Seasons and Time Commitments: Internships are typically full time (40 hours per week) Monday through Friday with occasional weekend work. Internships are offered on a seasonal basis as follows (may be negotiable):
Summer: June- August
Fall: September- November
Winter/Spring: January- May
9 months: September- May
