About Belwin Conservancy:

Belwin Conservancy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, restoration and appreciation of our natural world. Located in Afton, Belwin is only 15 miles from the Twin Cities metro area. Our 1,400 acres of permanently protected land includes woodlands, restored and remnant prairies, oak savanna, ponds, streams, and wetlands. Belwin’s mission is to inspire connections to the natural world, and we do that through conservation, restoration, environmental education, public access, and programs focused on art and nature.


Candidate Profile:

A strong candidate for Development Director position is a professional with a proven track record who will excel at fostering relationships across a broad cross-section of partners, understand that fundraising is about more than just dollars, and be genuinely interested in people and their ideas. The candidate’s excellent written and oral communication, project planning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills reflect a strong intellect, intuition, and sense of humor. The Development Director will demonstrate dedication to the values promoted by Belwin: inclusion, collaboration, respect, environmental stewardship, and integrity.


Position Summary:

The Development Director is a full-time leadership position at Belwin Conservancy. This position will work in partnership with the Executive Director to build and implement a well-rounded fundraising program and create a culture of philanthropy for Belwin staff and board. The Development Director will supervise volunteers and work directly with board members on fundraising efforts. Belwin’s team is small and administrative support for this role is minimal, so the ideal candidate is someone who is a do-er and a thinker, both detail-oriented and a big-picture strategist.



  • Design and implement individual fundraising strategies that will retain current supporters, cultivate larger gifts and acquire new donors
  • Plan and implement special giving campaigns such as Fund-a-Need and Give to the Max Day
  • Coordinate grant writing and submission with other Belwin staff
  • Plan and coordinate fundraising and stewardship events
  • Partner with Executive Director to identify and cultivate high-potential donors and funders
  • Engage board members, other staff members, and volunteers in fundraising efforts
  • Serve as the main staff contact for development volunteers and committees
  • Give outdoor tours to Belwin supporters and partners in all seasons
  • Write and design donors appeals, stewardship materials, and other collateral
  • Generate lists and reports for board meetings, mailings, and events
  • Generate acknowledgement letters and emails
  • Manage our online donation platform
  • Work closely with our CRM administrator to optimize our use of Salesforce and integrated programs


Qualifications and skills of the ideal candidate: 

  • Passion for the outdoors, conservation, and environmental stewardship
  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Five years of work experience that includes project and systems management, leadership roles, and customer service
  • Ability to be an enthusiastic ambassador and champion for Belwin’s mission
  • Drive to learn and grow professionally
  • Ability to multitask and balance multiple priorities
  • Outstanding attention to detail and well-organized
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong collaborative management skills
  • Ability to work independently and hold others accountable
  • Experience with MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint
  • Ability to learn new technology applications as required
