Summary / Purpose

Please note that the hiring process for these positions is through AmeriCorps.  If you are selected, you will be hired as an AmeriCorps member (not a City of Duluth employee). 

Description of site:

The mission of Duluth Parks and Recreation is to "promote the health and well-being of our community, environment and economy by facilitating recreational opportunities and coordinating the enhancement of our parks, facilities and natural resources now and into the future"

Parks and Recreation is working on an exciting program expansion and will be providing a variety of summer camps and programs for youth grades K-5, as well as special events for the families within the community. Programs will focus on getting youth outdoors and exploring our parks. Parks and Recreation will be working with partners throughout the community to achieve this goal. The programs will range from camps to one day programs.

Location: City Hall Parks and Recreation Office, 411 West 1st St. Duluth, MN 55802

Start/End Dates: May 15, 2019-August 16, 2019

Hours: Monday through Friday, hours vary 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and some weekends

Position size(s):

3 Quarter Time slots: 460 hours total (each)

4 Summer Associate slots: 315 hours total (each)

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Responsibilities of member:

The AmeriCorps member will share a vital role in assisting the delivery of the programs Parks and Recreation would like to implement. The member will help with the planning and implementation of programs that they will be assigned to. Each member will be assigned to work closely with our full time staff to ensure they are supported. Program responsibilities will include preparing supplies, logistics, and equipment. Members will be working with youth in the programs and conduct follow-up surveys after. Members will also be working with Youth Outdoors-Duluth to provide outdoor education and outdoor recreation programming for the community. Breakdown of duties include:

  • Supervise and monitor scheduled recreational activities and special events
  • Assist in planning, organizing recreational activities and special events
  • Contribute to evaluating programs and other staff and affiliated cosponsoring agencies
  • Provide exceptional customer service
  • Ensure safe operation of recreation areas and equipment
  • Effectively communicate with and teach participants
  • Communicate with Recreation Specialist on any concerns or questions
  • Maintain and organize equipment

Minimum Qualifications


  • Experience with or strong desire to plan and deliver outdoor programming for youth
  • Experience working with youth and youth programs
  • Demonstrate awareness and acceptance of cultural differences
  • Experience working collaboratively with youth and young adults
  • Initiative to plan and follow through with projects and programs
  • Able to work independently without much direction as well as on teams
  • 2-or 4- year degree in social work, education, human services or related field
  • Able to present oneself in a highly professional manner and represent True North AmeriCorps, National Service and Duluth Parks and Recreation
