Preschool Educator (part-time and full-time for the school year)

The Aldo Leopold Nature Center is seeking energetic, experienced, and organized individuals to be Preschool Educators in its new Nature Preschool. Aldo Leopold Nature Preschool (ALNP) aims to provide high-quality, developmentally-appropriate early childhood experiences that foster a love of nature and a lifelong, meaningful relationship with the nature world for all children. ALNC is a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to delivering hands-on, outdoor environmental education in the spirit of Aldo Leopold to schools, youth groups, summer campers, adult groups and the public. Aldo Leopold Nature Center offers programs that serve over 70,000 individuals annually. Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Nature Preschool Director the Lead and Assistant Educators are primarily responsible for the supervision of the students enrolled at ALNP. The Educators are also responsible for helping to maintain safe and engaging indoor and outdoor classroom spaces. In addition, the Preschool Educators collaborate with each other on the implementation of the curriculum. The Educators must be willing to spend a majority of every day outside in all weather, facilitating the hands-on, nature-based, child-centered, emergent-style curriculum, supporting and encouraging students to learn to love learning while playing outside. ALNP’s ideal candidate has a genuine love for young children, a deep personal connection to nature and a strong commitment to high quality early childhood programming.

Specific duties & responsibilities include:

  • Planning and implementation of ALNP program. Supervision and care of children. Help to maintain a healthy, safe, engaging, and positive environment (inside and outside) for children that support positive whole-child development. Implement daily practices and routines within a nature play-based, emergent curriculum that promotes early childhood development and deep nature connections. Carry out all aspects of the ALNP daily activities and routines. Demonstrate a desire to work outdoors and an eagerness to learn (more) about the natural world through the eyes of a child. Guide students in their learning and explorations in a calm, encouraging and consistent manner.
  • Participate in beginning school year preparations, orientations and end of school year clean-up. Assist with special events or activities and fundraising efforts (Preschool and Nature Center). Uphold the vision, mission and philosophy of ALNC and ALNP in all duties and practices.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Experience working with preschool age children in formal and/or non-formal education settings.
  • Supervisory experience required for Lead Preschool Educator.
  • Excellent communication skills with adults and children.
  • Ability to provide a safe environment for exploration, demonstrate patience and caring, and exude a love of learning.
  • Respect, concern, and excitement for the natural environment and a demonstrated ability to share that excitement with others.
  • Desire to work outside in all weather and have willingness and ability to meet physical demands of the position (i.e., hike over uneven terrain, bending, kneeling, lifting 50 pounds).
  • Knowledge of regional flora and fauna preferred, but not required.
  • Superior work ethic, self-starter, strong attention to detail, excellent organization & planning skills.
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in environmental education, education, early childhood education, natural science or related field. Experience can supplant the degree requirement. ALNC values wisdom and experience and understands that this may not come through a formal degree.
  • Compliance with DCF educational and experience-related specifications for early childhood teachers.
  • Experience with database software or ability to become proficient.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other Windows-based programs. Proficiency using Google calendar, Google Drive and other GSuite programs.
  • Respect, concern, and excitement for the natural environment and a demonstrated ability to share that excitement with others.
  • Team player with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; able to shift gears quickly.
  • Tact and sensitivity with the public, program participants, staff, and volunteers.
  • Excellent phone and email etiquette; thorough follow-up practice.
  • Spanish language skills a plus, but not required.
  • Standard First Aid and Adult/Infant & Child CPR/AED and Shaken Baby syndrome training required.

Personal Qualities:

These are newly created positions, based on growth and strategic goals of the organization and the subsequent opening of ALNP. The successful candidate must be able to manage their schedule and work well in a team environment with other staff, volunteers, and families. The ability to manage and communicate in an open, transparent and effective way with staff and participants from various backgrounds will be important in this position. Flexibility, positive attitude, initiative, the ability to prioritize responsibilities, problem solving skills, and a sense of humor are a must. Must demonstrate a genuine caring attitude towards young children and the environment.

Compensation & Benefits:

Full and part time positions available. Competitive hourly rate or annual salary commensurate with experience and education. ALNC offers medical & dental insurance (60/40 employer/employee split), life insurance, and paid vacation for full time staff. Benefit packages available for part time staff who qualify.

Time Commitment:

For Assistant Educators this is a part-time position, generally about 20-25 hours/week, Monday-Friday with the specific schedule to be determined upon hire. In general ALNP will require part-time staff to assist in the mornings for MWF or

T/R and help cover lunch for the full-day classroom. For Lead Educators, this is a full-time position, generally MondayFriday during business hours. Occasional weekend or evening hours may be required due to programs and events.
