Minnesota Master Naturalist Big Woods Big Rivers Class at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge

Monday, June 11, 2018

Join us at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge to learn about the Big Woods, Big Rivers of Minnesota. This 43,000 acre refuge is one of the most diverse vegetative zones in North America, where tallgrass prairie, northern hardwood and boreal forests coverge. It has over 20 lakes, 3 rivers, and hundreds of marshes and woodland ponds.

This class includes both indoor and outdoor classroom learning. You will gain valuable skills for exploring the animals, plants, geology, hydrology, ecology and cultural history of Minnesota. One all day and four short field trips are included in the schedule. Participants will complete a group capstone service project.

Be sure to dress for the weather each day as we will be incorporating hands-on outdoor lessons each day. Guest speakers will include specialists from the area that will join us both indoors and outdoors. Tamarac Refuge offers spectacular woods and waters right outside the door. From walks through the tall pine to dip netting for dragonfly larvae you'll be immersed in the nature of the big woods and big rivers of Minnesota.

Attendance of all five days will be required for successful completion of this class.

While some snacks will be provided, meals are on your own. You will need to bring your lunch. We do have limited kitchen facilities with a microwave and refrigerator.

Lodging is on your own. Detroit Lakes is the closest town for lodging. There are also several resorts in the area that often have good deals on cabin rentals this time of year.
